Minnesota High School Hockey recap 1-26-2023

Our Class A stars of the night team edition were:

Northfield 3 Albert Lea 0
Northfield got a huge section 1A win over rival Albert Lea last night.  Scoring for the Raiders was Kamden Kaiser, Brayden Olsen and Will Cashin.  Goalie Keaton Walock saved all 21 shots he faced.  Northfield is now 14-4 and appears to have the #1 seed in section 1A.  They will play Rochester Mayo tomorrow.  Albert Lea is 12-5 and is looking at the 2 or 3 seed in section 1A, they will play Faribault tomorrow at 6:15.

Little Falls 5  Cambridge/Isanti 1
Little Falls probably locked up the #1 seed in section 5A with this win last night.  Carter Oothoudt would score a short-handed goal in the first period to get it started for the Flyers.  Cambridge/Isanti 10th grader Josh Sauro would answer with his 5th goal of the season and it was 1-1 after the first period.  Little Falls would go on to score 4 unanswered goals and Carter Oothoudt would secure the hat-trick, Matt Filippi and Garret Lindberg would each add a goal in the win.  Little Falls is now 10-7-1 and will head to Mound tomorrow for a 3:00 game.  Cambridge/Isanti is 9-8 and will play Tartan January 31 at 7:00.

Providence Academy 8  Blake 4
Providence Academy got a nice win vs a good Blake team last night.  Louie Wehmann would score 5 goals giving him 31 on the season so far.  Johnny Hendrickson would add a goal and Sammy Lewis would add 2 more for the Providence Academy Lions.  They are now 9-8 and will play Northern Lakes tomorrow at 3:00.  Blake is 11-6-1 and plays the Academy of Holy Angels tomorrow at 2:00.

The Class AA stars of the night:

Eastview 4  Cretin Derham Hall 2
Eastview got a huge win over Cretin last night.  This squad was so close to making the state tournament last season and the seniors can still taste it.  Cretin would score the first goal of the game, Lucas Cernohous 3:07 in the first period.  Tanner Kronberg would get his 9th goal of the game for Eastview to make it 1-1 after the first period.  Charlie Ortman would make it 2-1 Eastview early on in the second before Colin Scanlan tied it up again, it was 2-2 after the 2nd period.  Billy Downs and Zach Wooten would score the final 2 goals of the game, Zach’s goal was an empty netter to seal the huge win for Eastview.  They are now 11-6 and will play Prior Lake tomorrow at 1:00 for the second time this season, the last meeting was a 5-1 win for Eastview.  Cretin Derham Hall is 13-5-1 and they will play Chaska tomorrow at 2:00.

Edina 5   Wayzata 3
Jackson Nevers got the party started for Edina, he would score twice in the first period giving the Hornets a 2-0 lead after 1.  Bobby Cowan would add a 3rd goal right away in the 2nd period to make it 3-0 Edina.  Wayzata never fully recovered in this game, Jacob Kvasnicka and Brittan Alstead would score for the Trojans making it 4-2 after the second period.  Jibber Kuhl added a powerplay goal for Wayzata and Caden Morgan added the fifth goal of the game for Edina with 3 seconds left to play.  Edina is 12-4-1 and will play Eden Prairie tomorrow night at 7:15.  Wayzata falls to 13-3-2 and will head to Buffalo tomorrow for a 3:00 game.

Benilde St. Margarets 4  Chanhassen 1
Benilde would end Chanhassen’s 16 game winning streak with 3 goals in the first period.  Michael Risteau would get his 11th, Drew Stewart (Notre Dame commit) would get his 18th goal and Ben Norris got his 5th goal.  At the 10:51 mark of the 3rd period Ben Norris added his 6th goal of the season to make it 4-0 Benilde before Gavin Uhlenkamp (Wisconsin commit) scored his 9th goal of the year making it 4-1.  That would remain the final score and Benilde St. Margarets improves to 13-5 and the will host Waconia January 31.  Chanhassen is now 16-2 and they play Bloomington Jefferson tomorrow at 3:00.
