2025–26 Breck Mustangs Season Preview, Fresh Core Ready to Step Up
The Breck Mustangs turn the page on a standout senior class and head into the 2025–26 season with a youthful, promising roster. With leading scorer Ben Amato, top-pair defender Jack Drawz, and starting goaltender Isaac Nguyen graduating, Breck will rely on a solid group of returning juniors and sophomores to keep the program competitive in Section 2A. (along with any new players we are not aware of yet)
Key Returning Players
Garrett Trench (#13, F, Sr.)
Trench is now the face of the program. He tallied 51 points (24G, 27A) last season and was a consistent two-way force. Expect him to anchor the top line, take on more special teams minutes, and serve as the team’s emotional leader.
Cooper Klinck (#17, D, Sr.)
A key blue-line returner, Klinck posted 36 points (10G, 26A) and was a top contributor on the power play. He’ll now quarterback the defense and will be one of the highest-producing returning defensemen in the section.
Nick Downing (#9, F, Sr.)
Downing chipped in 12 points last year and brings quickness, a scoring touch, and valuable experience to the second line. His role will increase this season with top forwards graduated.
Wesley Robbins (#2, F, Sr.)
Robbins had 8 points and the frame (6’2″, 170 lbs) to play a strong power forward role. He’ll be asked to do more in the offensive zone this year.
George MacBean (#11, F, Sr.)
A physical winger who tallied 6 assists, MacBean brings grit and presence to the Mustangs’ forward depth.
Rocco Zoia (#16, D, Sr.)
Reliable and steady, Zoia contributed 13 points last year and will likely be leaned on in shutdown situations alongside Klinck.
Joseph Abrams (#7, D, So.)
Abrams impressed as a freshman with 14 points from the blue line. He could take another big leap this season and form a top D-pair with Klinck or Zoia.
Owen Van Horn (#14, F, Sr.)
Van Horn added 7 points and will be part of the scoring depth rotation, likely slotting in on a second or third line.
Oliver Swanson (#12, D, Sr.)
Returns with varsity minutes under his belt and adds experience to the defensive corps.
Up-and-Coming Talent
-
Will Offenhauser (#24, F, So.) and Ryan Pierce (#77, F/D, So.): Two young players with varsity experience last year. Both could see a bigger role and provide much-needed energy in the bottom six.
-
Sawyer Malkinson (#20, F, Sr.): Played 17 games last season and adds valuable forward depth.
-
Joseph Abrams (So.): As mentioned, could have a breakout year on the blue line.
- Interactive Digital Training: Enhance puck control and reaction time with real-time feedback on your stickhandling technique. The patented system helps refine skills and elevate on-ice performance.
Goalie Situation
With starter Isaac Nguyen graduating, the net is wide open. The frontrunner is Mac West (#29, Sr.), who went 5-0-0 with a 1.75 GAA and .931 SV% in limited action last season. His ability to handle a full-time starter’s workload will be key.
Also returning is Danny Paster (#31, Sr.), who saw limited time last season and could provide depth or push West in a rotation.
Season Outlook
While Breck graduates nearly all of its top-line firepower, this year’s squad brings back strong pieces on both ends of the ice — especially on defense. With Trench leading the offense and Klinck, Zoia, and Abrams anchoring the blue line, the Mustangs have a foundation to build on.
Goaltending will be the biggest X-factor, but if Mac West can replicate last year’s success in a larger role, Breck could stay competitive and evolve into a dangerous playoff team by February.
