We’re down to the final two — and Saturday night’s Frozen Four championship is set to be one for the books.
After two gritty semifinal battles in St. Louis, it’ll be Western Michigan vs. Boston University in the national title game. For Minnesota hockey fans, there’s a little extra to cheer for — with Alex Bump (Prior Lake) and the Slukynsky brothers, Grant and Hampton (Warroad), all chasing their first-ever NCAA championship.
🔥 Western Michigan Shocks Denver in Double OT
The Broncos are officially title-game bound after knocking out defending national champion Denver 3-2 in double overtime.
-
🥅 Owen Michaels buried the game-winner just 26 seconds into 2OT, firing home a rebound after a rush started by Matteo Costantini.
-
🧱 Freshman goalie Hampton Slukynsky (Warrraod MN) stood tall with 20 saves, while the Broncos set a new program record with their 33rd win of the season.
-
⚠️ Denver tied the game late in regulation with 2:39 left, but couldn’t hold off WMU’s relentless pressure in OT.
-
🏒 Brian Kramer also scored for Western, and the team now rides a 9-game win streak into the final.
This will be Western Michigan’s first-ever national championship game appearance.
🐾 Boston University Books Final Spot with Win Over Penn State
BU took care of business in the second semifinal, skating past Penn State 3-1 behind a balanced attack and stellar goaltending from Mikhail Yegorov.
-
⭐ Jack Hughes opened the scoring early, and Cole Eiserman added another in the second.
-
🧤 Yegorov turned aside 32 shots, including a breakaway stop and several late-period saves.
-
🧊 With the win, BU advances to its first Frozen Four final in 10 years, and chases its sixth national title overall.
This Terriers roster has plenty of NHL talent, but it’s the chemistry, speed, and structure under head coach Jay Pandolfo — himself a BU national champion and two-time Stanley Cup winner — that has them peaking at the right time.
