Northern Lakes Punches Ticket to State with Section Title Victory Over Alexandria

For the first time in program history, Northern Lakes is heading to the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament, securing the Section 6A championship with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Alexandria.

Under the leadership of legendary head coach Mike Randolph, Northern Lakes delivered a statement win, capitalizing on early scoring chances and holding off a late push from Alexandria to secure the historic milestone.

Game Recap

Northern Lakes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, with Griffen Hannah and Parker Fulton finding the back of the net. Alexandria responded late in the period with a goal from Grady Olson, cutting the lead in half.

In the second, William Thornburg tied things up for Alexandria, but Drew Paulbeck answered twice for Northern Lakes, scoring at 6:30 and 9:32, re-establishing a two-goal cushion at 4-2 heading into the final period.

With their season on the line, Alexandria mounted a push in the third, dominating possession and outshooting Northern Lakes 19-8 in the frame. Niklas Schultz capitalized on a power play goal with under three minutes to play, making it a one-goal game, but Northern Lakes stood tall defensively in the final moments, sealing the section championship.

Northern Lakes Heads to State

With the victory, Northern Lakes claims its first-ever trip to the Minnesota State Tournament. Coach Mike Randolph, one of the most accomplished bench bosses in state history, adds another chapter to his storied career by guiding the Lightning to their first appearance at the Xcel Energy Center.

Northern Lakes now prepares for the Class A State Tournament, where they will look to continue their magical run on the biggest stage in Minnesota high school hockey.
