Andover Stays Hot with 4-2 Win Over Grand Rapids
Andover continued its impressive second-half surge with a 4-2 victory over Grand Rapids, further cementing itself as a dangerous opponent heading into the end of the regular season. The Huskies used a strong special teams performance and a dominant second period to overcome an early deficit, extending their winning streak to six games, and 8 of the last 10.
Game Recap: Huskies Overcome Early Deficit
Grand Rapids got on the board first when Caleb Gunderson scored at 5:15 of the first period off assists from Will Miskovich and Colton Stupar. The Thunderhawks carried that 1-0 lead into the first intermission, but Andover took control from there.
The Huskies exploded in the second period, scoring three times in a span of just over 15 minutes.
- Camden Langfeld started the rally on a power-play goal at 1:35, assisted by Chase Nadeau and KJ Sauer.
- Casey Rodgers followed up at 3:41 with an even-strength goal off a feed from Langfeld and Owen Lutgen, giving Andover its first lead.
- After Grand Rapids tied it at 8:27 with a power-play goal from Luka Rohloff, the Huskies reclaimed the lead at 16:35 when Sauer struck on the power play, set up by Langfeld and Nadeau.
Andover’s defense locked things down in the third period, and Sauer iced the game with an empty-netter at 16:13, sealing the 4-2 win.
Special Teams Shine Again for Andover
One of the biggest reasons for Andover’s turnaround has been its power play, which converted on 2 of 4 opportunities (50%) in this game. The Huskies have been lethal on the man advantage during their winning streak, and they continue to punish teams for undisciplined play.
On the flip side, Andover’s penalty kill held strong, allowing just one goal on three chances. With playoff hockey often coming down to special teams efficiency, the Huskies have turned this into a strength at the perfect time.
Why Andover Will Be a Nightmare in the Playoffs
At 10-11-0, Andover’s record doesn’t scream dominance, but this team is peaking at the right time. Here’s why the Huskies are a team nobody will want to face:
1. Momentum and Confidence
- After a brutal start to the season (3-10 record through December), Andover has flipped the script with seven wins in its last eight games, and 8 of the past 10.
- Wins over teams like Centennial, Rosemount, Holey Angels, and Grand Rapids show this team is ready for playoff hockey.
2. Special Teams Dominance
- Andover’s power play has been one of the best in the section, consistently converting at a high rate.
- Their penalty kill has tightened up, making them tough to score on when shorthanded.
3. Emerging Star Power
- KJ Sauer (2G, 1A vs. Grand Rapids) has become a clutch performer in big games.
- Camden Langfeld (1G, 2A) continues to be a playmaker, setting up key goals.
- Goaltender Cash Cruitt (.920 SV%) has been a rock in net, giving Andover a chance to win every night.
4. Playoff Battle-Tested
- This team has played close games against top opponents all season.
- They’ve lost six games by one goal, showing they’re competitive in tight battles.
Looking Ahead: Andover’s Final Tests Before Playoffs
The Huskies will look to continue their winning ways as they finish the regular season with four big matchups:
- Feb 4 – vs. Blaine
- Feb 6 – @ Rogers
- Feb 11 – vs. Centennial
- Feb 13 – @ Maple Grove
Final Thoughts: A Dangerous Dark Horse
Andover’s midseason resurgence has put the rest of Section 7AA on notice. If they continue to play at this level, they won’t just be a tough out in the playoffs—they could make a deep run. With a hot goaltender, elite special teams, and a winning streak, the Huskies are proving they belong in the conversation for a section title contender.
If you’re in the 7AA bracket, one thing is for sure—you don’t want to see Andover in the first round.
