Friday Night Hockey Recap: Hat Tricks, Nail-Biters, and Dominant Victories from Around the State.

In an early-season statement, Northfield skated past Minneapolis 5-2 on Tuesday night, proving they could dominate the ice in both ends. Led by a standout performance from forward Will Cashin, who recorded a hat trick, Northfield showcased why they could be a force in this year’s high school hockey circuit.

Cashin Dominates in All Situations

It took just under two minutes into the first period for Cashin to make his mark. Northfield found themselves on the penalty kill early, but Cashin capitalized with a shorthanded goal, perfectly reading a loose puck and beating Minneapolis goalie Adam Lybeck with a precise shot to the top corner. That goal set the tone for Northfield’s aggressive play, even when down a man.

Later in the first period, Northfield continued to press offensively. Wade Gilbertson added another goal, thanks to a clever setup by Ashton Pumper, giving Northfield a 2-0 lead as they entered the second.

Minneapolis’s Brief Comeback

The second period started off well for Northfield as Cashin struck again at 2:16, extending the lead to 3-0. Minneapolis, however, managed to claw their way back into the game. At 8:40, Nik Nordeen found the net, converting on a feed from Rory Kronick to cut the deficit. It gave Minneapolis a much-needed boost, and they followed up with another goal late in the period from Hudson Kruse, who tapped in a rebound off assists from Matthew Walsh and Maverick Knote.

Northfield Pulls Away

Despite Minneapolis’s momentum, Northfield regained control in the third. Ben Geiger added an insurance marker at 8:59, assisted by defenseman Bridger Riley and Brody Jenson. Geiger’s goal was a textbook example of Northfield’s disciplined offensive forecheck, forcing a turnover and converting it into a quick strike. Cashin rounded out his hat trick at 14:43, putting the game out of reach after a great setup from Geiger and Michael Steward.

Goaltending Analysis

Max Frank was sharp between the pipes for Northfield, stopping 18 of the 20 shots he faced, finishing with a .900 save percentage. Frank’s ability to stay calm during Minneapolis’s brief pushback in the second period kept Northfield on track.

On the other end, Adam Lybeck faced an onslaught of 32 shots and managed 27 saves, with a save percentage of .844. Despite the loss, Lybeck’s resilience prevented Northfield from running up the score even further, particularly in the early phases of the game where Northfield was relentless.

What’s Next

For Northfield, the victory further solidifies their strong start to the season. Cashin’s performance is a reminder of his capability to take over a game, especially with his shorthanded abilities that can change the tide in any matchup. Minneapolis will need to regroup and tighten up defensively if they want to avoid digging themselves into early deficits moving forward in a tough section 2A schedule this season.
