By all accounts Luverne had an exception year last season going 21-8-1 and scoring over 5 goals per game. Heading into post season play they rattled off 8 straight wins, while outscoring opponents 47-20 during that stretch. The section 3A playoffs opened with Luverne hosting Windom in a rematch from the last regular season game for both teams. Windom would score first to take the early lead but it was all Luverne after that, they poured 53 shots on goal and walked out of the arena with a 5-2 win to advance the the section quarterfinal game against Mankato East. Mankato was the preseason section favorite for many people (except FTP, we picked Luverne to win the section) and they held their own thru the first 2 periods of play, the score was 2-2 heading into the 3rd. From then on it was all Luverne, Brock Behrend would score twice, Patrick Kroski and Elliot Domagala would add a goal and the final ended up 6-2 Luverne, this win advanced them to the section championship against the New Ulm Eagles. This game was a back and forth, pretty evenly match event, after the first period it was all tied at 1 with goals from Brady Bork (Luverne) and Blake Soukup (New Ulm). We only saw 1 goal in the 2nd scored by Luvernes Blaik Bork to give them a 2-1 lead heading into the 3rd period where he would score again to make it 3-1 for a few minutes. New Ulms Bryer Lang would score about 2 minutes later to get the Eagles within 1 goal but that was all the scoring they would do and Luverne would get the win 4-2 and earn a trip to the Minnesota High School Hockey state tournament.
Historically section 3A does not perform very well at the Tournament and although Luverne gave it their best shot they faced off against a very talented Hermantown Hawks team who would outshoot Luverne 49-13 en-route to a 6-0 opening round win. This loss dropped Luverne into the consolation bracket where they played Alexandria and lost 7-3 to put an end to their season.
Luverne should return starting goalie Tyler Arends, along with leading scorer Patrick Kroski (68 points), Owen Sudenga, (51 points) Elliot Domagala (43 points) Blaik Bork, (38 points) and Maddux Domagala (22 points), and they should be the preseason favorite once again to win section 3A assuming all eligible players return and everyone stays healthy.
