Minnesota high school hockey recap for January 20, 2023
Last night in the Minnesota high school hockey world, the Academy of holy angels and Cloquet skate to an 8-8 tie. Henry Lechner for the holy angels had four goals and an assist in the tie. The holy angels are now 9–4–1 and will play Duluth marshal today at 3:00. Cloquet is 8-6-1 and plays rock Ridge January 24.
East Grand Forks would beat Duluth Denfeld 5–1, they out shot Denfield 46–16, senior Brock Schultz would score two goals for the Green wave as they improved to 10–6, they will play Bemidji today. Duluth Denfeld is 10 –7–1 and has a huge game tonight against undefeated Warroad.
White bear lake played grand rapids last night and they got the win 3–0. Aiden Welch, Nolan Roed and Grady Gallatin would get the goals for White Bear Lake. They are now 13–2 and will play the Chanhassen storm January 24. Grand Rapids is 11–6, and has a game against Hill-Murray today at 2:15.
Hermantown would get a 3-2 victory over Moorhead. Will Esterbrooks would score with 10 seconds left in the game to give the hawks the one goal win and improve that teams record to 12 –1–.1 Hermantown plays St. Thomas Academy today at 2 o’clock. Moorhead is 8–8 and they play Brainerd today at 3 o’clock in Brainerd.
Two Rivers would out shoot Rochester Lourdes 42–14, and get the win 2–1. Rochester goalie Xander Carter Cleven would post a .952 save % in the loss for his squad. He is a fantastic goalie in southern Minnesota. Two Rivers is now 13–3-1 and they play tartan today at 7 o’clock
New Prague would get a 5–4 victory over Hutchinson despite getting out shot 38–23. Manney Pearce and AJ Ladwig would have a big night for the Hutchinson tigers in the losing effort. New Prague improves to 10–5 and has a huge game January 24 versus Orono. Hutchinson is now 6–8 and they play Marshall January 24.
Park Rapids got a nice 6–5 overtime win over a hot Bagley/Fosston team last night. Bagley had won 8 of their past 10 games heading into this matchup. Josh Hillukka got the OT game winning goal for Park Rapids and they were the #3 star of the night for us last night.
Eagan was the number 2 star of the night for their 3-2 win over Eastview last night. AJ Clark would get the game winning goal at 10:34 in the 3rd period. Eagan is now 4-11 and will host prior lake January 24. Eastview is 9–6 and will head to Farmington January 24.
In a rematch from last year’s section title game, the end result would be similar. Alexandria would win 4–0 over Fergus Falls Alexandria is 4-10–1 and despite their record are still probably the favorite to win the section once again. Fergus Falls is 8-5-1 and will play Sauk Rapids January 24.
Little Falls squared off against thief River Falls last night up in thief River Falls. This was a close game the entire night so it was fitting that it went to overtime. Remi Chisholm of Little Falls would get the game-winning goal at the 6:14 mark of overtime. Little Falls improves to 8-7–1 and they head up to Crookston this afternoon. Thief River Falls is 8-9–1 and they will head over to Greenway January 27
In the FTP game of the night it was number 1 Wayzata versus number 1 Warroad. The stars for Warroad were Jason Shaugabay, Carson Pilgrim and goalie Hampton Slukynsky. Warroad would get the victory 3–0 to improve to 15–0. Wayzata suffers just their second loss of the season. They are now 13–2–1 and will play Roseau this afternoon.
