Warroad 3 – Hermantown 1
In the biggest high school hockey game since March of 2022 it was defending state champion Hermantown, vs undefeated Warroad (13-0). Hermantown would score first to make it 1-0 after 1, (Wyatt Carlson), however it was all Warroad after that. Murray Marvin-Cordes would score in the second to make it a 1-1 game after 2. Then senior Garrett Hennum would benefit off a rush to the net and score his 4th goal of the season. (video below). Jayson Shaugabay would add the third goal and that would also put him at #18 on the state all time leading scorers list. Final score would be 3-1 and sets up what is sure to be an excellent state tournament rematch this march! All eyes will be on Warroad this friday evening as they take on class 2A # 1 ranked Wayzata in an epic Minnesota High School hockey game.
Rochester John Marshall 5 – Rochester Mayo 3
For the first time in more than 5 years Rochester JM would defeat crosstown rival Rochester Mayo. Despite getting outshout 41-18 they would pull off the upset victory. Goalie Cody Vlasaty was outstanding in the win, he posted a .927 save %, with 38 saves overall. Scoring for Rochester JM was Mason Decker, Jayden Veney x2 and Peyton Eckhoff. Rochester JM is now 6-8-1 on the season and will host Owatonna January 19th at 7:00. Rochester Mayo is 9-3-1 and has a huge game against Northfield tonite.
Rogers 3 – Maple Grove 3
In a rematch of last years section 5AA championship game and possibly a preview of this years game there was no actual winner. Maple Grove would outshoot Rogers 53-34 but could not get the game winner past Rogers goalie Cade Chapman. The goal scorers for Rogers were Carson Melquist and Sam Ranallo x2. Maple Groves goals were scored by Jay Ellingson, Blake Steenerson and Finn Brink. This game will set the table for the section playoffs and we will see if Rogers can pull off what they could not do last season. Rogers is now 9-2-3 on the season and will play Osseo January 19th, Maple Grove sits at 12-2-1 and heads to Champlin Park January 19th to play a good Champlin Park squad(10-4-1).
Mounds View 4 – Stillwater 3
Mounds Views goalie Aidan Petrich had a sensational game vs Stillwater. He faced 52 shots on goal and would only allow 3 past him, thats good for a .942 save %! Mounds View would get goals from Sam Schulte x2, Grant Dean and Aiden Bale. Stillwaters goals came from Brody Dustin and Morgan Spetz. Mounds View improves to 5-7-1 after the upset victory and plays East Rdige January 19th. Stillwater is now 8-4-1 and hosts Hill-Murray January 17th at 7:00.
Cloquet 4 – Coon Rapids 5
The Coon Rapids Cardinals would hand Cloquet their 2nd loss in the past 3 games despite being outshot 37-28. Coon Rapids was trailing 3-1 with about 3:00 left to play in the second period when Tyler Barsness would score to make it a 3-2 game heading into the 3rd period. They would then score 3 straight goals in the 3rd, Cayden Alphin, Ben Kish and Tristan Golen. Ethan Kilichowski would get a shorthaned goal for Cloquet at the end of the game to make it a 5-4 final. Coon Rapids is now 6-6 on the season and heads to Forest Lake tomorrow. Cloquet is 8-4 and has a huge section game vs Grand Rapids January 17th at the IRA Civic Center in Grand Rapids.
East Ridge 5 – Roseville 2
East Ridge improves to 7-6-0 after beating a good Roseville squad Saturday evening. It was a good night for Grant Kohnen with 3 goals and Brady Knutsen would add 2 more. Roseville’s Landon Steffen would get his 100th career High School point in this game, it was his 22nd goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough to take down the East RIdge Raptors. Roseville is 9-5-1 and will play Forest Lake tonight. East Ridge will host Mounds View January 19th at 7:30.
Edina 3 – Minnetonka 0 (GIRLS HOCKEY)
In the Bally Sports North game of the day it was the Edina Hornets getting 2 goals from Ellie Chapman and one from Lorelai Nelson to shut out a very good Minnetonka Skippers hockey team. Minnetonka is now 16-2 on the season and plays Eden Prairie January 17th. Edina improves to 12-3-1 and will host Blake tomorrow evening.
