Mahtomedi Ties With Conference Leaders St. Thomas Academy
The Mahtomedi Zephyrs played right with the Metro East leaders St. Thomas Academy Cadets and ended the game with a 2-2 tie. In a clean game with no penalties, Mahtomedi goaltender #32 Ben Dardis stopped 34 shots and St. Thomas’s #1 Carsten Lardy stopped 37 to keep their teams competitive. Mahtomedi opened the scoring with a goal from forward #9 Nick Beiersdorf (assists by #10 Adam Johnson and #22 Dylan Duckson) at 9:08 in the first. #18 Jack Strobel tied it for the Cadets at 5:48 in the second (assists from #14 Tommy Cronin and #17 Bobby Cunningham) and Cronin gave them the lead seven minutes, with an assist from #7 Max Nagel. Mahtomedi evened it up again with a goal from #34 Carter Haycraft at 14:47, with #3 Grant Dardis and # 18 Brent Gulenchyn assisting. Despite a third period with strong offense from both teams, neither could score the game winner and the game went into overtime. St. Thomas directed a flurry of shots toward Dardis, but thanks to the Zephyrs’ impressive play, only seven made it on net, allowing the visitors to hand the home team their third tie game in a row.
The Zephyrs face high flying Eden Prairie next Thursday which will be a huge test for this squad. The Cadets will host Henry Sibley on Tuesday, 2/23.
